About Linda Richardson

Linda Richardson is a highly experienced HR & learning and development specialist with over 20 years’ experience building capacity through learning events.
Following her experiences supporting disaster relief through developing learning support programmes, multi-media resources and monitoring and evaluation processes, she has co-developed a practical learning tool for humanitarian workers, the All In Diary, www.allindiary.org, which was successfully trialled in 2007.This project is an expression of her interest in developing practical and appropriate approaches to field-based learning.  In addition, she designs, develops and delivers a  wide-range of in-house training courses; facilitates key strategic events and project manages consultancy solutions on a variety of management topics.  Her approach is pragmatic, enthusiastic and shares up-to-date good practice across organisations and sectors.Her aim is to continue to develop and use her skills and experience addressing the challenges facing humanitarian and development organisations.




Current Activities:

Innovative approaches to field-based learning  

All In Diary project – 2006 to date – www.allindiary.org
In collaboration with Gill Price, Inter-face Development, has developed this practical tool for field-based humanitarian workers which has been trialled in over 25 countries around the world.  It aims to improve the quality and appropriateness of relief work through:
-       increasing awareness of good humanitarian practice
-       providing easy and timely access to relevant information and resources
-       facilitating organisational learning and programme continuity 

Video – Talking to the people – Sri Lanka - 2005
Responsible for the low-budget production in English, Sinhala and Tamil, of a video which highlights to importance of engaging with affected communities, and raises some controversial issues which can be used for facilitated discussion. CDs Co-produced interactive CD to provide wider dissemination of good practice in the design and construction of Transitional Shelters in Sri Lanka, post-tsunami; produced Facilitation Skills CD to accompany in-house training; commissioned and designed CD which accompanies the All In Diary.

Recent international experience  

April 2008 – Bangkok – WASH Cluster Coordinator Training
Co-developed, facilitated and delivered  a 5 day training course for WASH Cluster Coordinators, with UNICEF East Asia & Pacific Region Office. 

March 2008 – Tunisia – WHO Public Health Pre-Deployment Training
Designed, facilitated and co-delivered two day module on 'Health Sector in the Broader Humanitarian Context' covering current legal frameworks, systems and reforms, and how the humanitarian health sector, and WHO, operates within this environment. 

Jan/Feb 2008 – Sri Lanka – Evaluation of Learning Support & Capacity Building
Internal evaluation of RedR’s Learning Support and Capacity Building Programme in Sri Lanka in preparation for transition to an independent locally registered NGO. 

December 2007 – Montreux – Facilitator – WASH Cluster Coordinator training
Co-developed, facilitated and presented 5 day pilot training course for WASH Cluster Coordinators, through RedR and UNICEF. 

February 2006 - Pakistan – Facilitator – Emergency Shelter Cluster Lessons Learnt
Facilitated meetings drawing out the field perspective on the effectiveness of the Emergency Shelter Cluster, and produced report for the Lead Agency, IOM. 

November 2005 – Sri Lanka – M&E Process
Through research and consultation, devised a tailor-made M&E process, with template documents, for the RedR programme.  This approach has now been widely adopted in other offices.  Supported training on Community Participatory Approaches course, developing materials and coaching technical trainers. 

July 2005 - Sri Lanka – Evaluation of Learning Support & Capacity Building Programme.  
Through questionnaires, interviews and focus groups assessed the outputs and impact of RedR’s Learning Support and Capacity Building programme at a national, organisational and individual level. 

Feb/March 2005 – Sri Lanka – Learning Facilitator
A key player in the setting up a post-tsunami Learning Support and Capacity Building Programme for RedR, conducting Learning Needs Assessments, developing programmes and multi-media resources, facilitating events.

Focused, sensitive facilitation of events such as - team building, strategy development meetings, action learning sets, focus groups - aimed at sharing understanding, increasing knowledge, achieving consensus among diverse groups.
Training & Development
Customised, in-house training and development for managers, teams and individuals, creating a dynamic learning environment. Courses cover a wide range of interpersonal and management skills training, including Coaching, Train the Trainer, Leadership in Teams.  
Consultancy
Using breadth of experience and theoretical knowledge to develop solutions, policies or procedures on a range of management and human resource projects. 

OPEN LEARNING TUTOR - 1997 to date
Tutoring students studying for Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development membership through Manchester Open Learning (a branch of Manchester College of Arts and Technology)
·       Developing workshop materials to maximise learning
·       Advising, informing and mentoring on full range of current HR issues and topics
·       Developing students through assessment and feedback on assignments and reports
